Dog owner consulted me about dog's ear infection today. I noted that
his right nostril was OK now and took
a picture for comparison with Picture
No. 1857.

Nasal swelling in a young Golden
Retriever is probably inflammatory and
not a tumour. Surgical excision may
not be a good option for this dog.

Rabbit puts his paws deep inside his ears as part of his
grooming but all
paws are unaffected. Is it possible that
the paw temperature of the Flemish Giant is too high for the
scabies mite to live?
May 9, 2009 retrospective
review of the Flemish Giant case encountered in May 2008.
It is most likely that the Flemish Giant had scabies and ear
mites at the same time! The brown mite would be the ear mites
rather than scabies mites. This species is distinct from the scabies
mites. No detailed anatomical study was done to differentiate
the two species was done in this case.
Vet students may be interested in further study of the anatomy.
The treatment with one injection of ivermectin was effective. The
expatriate owner did not return or phoned.

Crusts seen only inside ears and nose. None in ear edges
or paws unlike smaller breeds. Why?

- 2346. Ear mites burrow inside ear canals causing bleeding and pain
to the rabbit. Us the microscopic exam of crusts and show the brown mites
to "impress" the rabbit owners. She said, "I trust the vet" but at
least she saw the real thing. Warded for ear cleaning for 7 days. These
ear mites are not the same as scabies
mites.

- 2344. In contrast to the human
female, the fertile period of the
female dog is when the vaginal
bleeding has ceased. This is usually
around the 8th to 12th day. Dam
bite the head and chest, thereby
killing 2 puppies within 24 hours after
surgery as the owner just stopped
supervising her for a moment. Is this
a case of
Canine post-partum depression? As
at May 8, 2009 5 pm, the owner
reported that the dam was nursing the
remaining 3 pups but was now under
24-hour human supervision and company.
