Banning HDB Cats

"Cats are ideal companions for all apartment residents in that they are easier to keep and are hygienic in that they naturally eliminate on litter boxes. They are not noisy or nomadic when sterilised at a young age of around 6  months of age. Cats can be trained to exercise outdoors on leashes but few cat owners do it in Singapore.

Public education of prospective cat owners to keep their cats safe at home from being attacked by other cats and being killed in car accidents via sterilisation, combined with  mandatory cat licensing with micro-chipping and low licence fees for sterilised cats are one possible solution to lift the blanket ban of cats in HDB (Housing and Development Board) apartments.

This solution is one step to further encourage responsible cat ownership, reduce considerably the complaints of noisy caterwauling, urine-marking of properties, indiscriminate peeing and pooping and straying of cats for all HDB residents.

Times have changed since I started practice some 26 years ago as the younger generation is better educated and more caring for animal welfare and health than my baby-boomer generation. It will be good if cat licensing can be implemented to let HDB cats have a secure home.

As over 80% of Singaporeans live in HDB apartments, lifting or banning of cats in the HDB and cat licensing have many ramifications for the bureaucrats.
