Hamster Tumour Myths Amongst Singaporeans

Case written: 20 August 2009

The following e-mail research reply to Toa Payoh Vets shoes typical thinking of many hamster owners in Singapore about no surgery for hamster tumours. A new internet gemeration like Remy's owner is well educated and informed.

Hi Dr Sing,

1) Remy did not bite his stitches...:)

2) I applied 'FRAMIXIN H' a antibiotic-anti dwarf hamster 1.5 years old, skin tumour or wart. Toa Payoh Vetsinflammatory cream after cleaning the affected area with 'AURACIENS'  I got both from the (Name of vet practice) many months back when my hamster 1st had his 1st tumour-wart

3) I googled 'Hamster tumour' and your vet was the 1st entry! I was looking for more info because the 1st vet i went to wasn't very confident about surgery, and the in-house vet at ... pet shop and my friend working in a pet shop all advised me against hamster surgery saying they will usually die while leaving the tumour alone is ok. While i searched the internet, articles say that tumours not removed will cause the hamster a painful death or something. And that if it's a pus-filled growth, it will eventually burst and the hamster will die from licking off the toxic pus or something like that. So i decided to get a 2nd opinion. When i read your case studies. I knew that if the tumour grew big, i would get very disturbed, so i had to find a way to get rid of it if the risk of success outweighs the death :)

Surgical excision is advised.  Hamster in this case is 1.5 years old. Average life span is 2-2.5 years. His slim lady owner in her 20s overfeeds him and has celebrated his birthday recently.

Dwarf Hamster-large fat tumour. Toa Payoh VetsShe did not wait too long to get the tumour excised compared to one of my biggest hamster tumour case (picture, left) - see : After Hamster tumour excision care. Slimming for Remy was strongly advised if she wants him to live longer.
